1. Find Your Inspiration 

You can find inspiration all over: Pinterest, magazines, TV shows, etc. Take some time to figure out what your theme is for your costumes, or what you want your family costume to be. When looking for ideas, make sure that you keep in mind what you’re good at. If you aren’t great at sewing, then a pattern for how to sew a Peter Pan costume is probably not a good idea. However, if you love to glue and put crafts together, then something that uses your talents would be a great idea. Don’t forget to take into consideration what event you will be wearing your costumes for and the possible weather conditions if you will be outside.

2. Search Your Home for Available Materials

Some of the most creative costumes can come from items you have lying around the house. A colander and pipe cleaners can become the head of an alien, a T-shirt can become a Super Hero Cape. Be creative and let your imagination wander, but most importantly, have fun with it. You may be surprised with what you come up with.

3. Head to the Store to Pick Up Any Needed Supplies/Materials

Once you’ve looked around to find the different items that you’ll be using from around the house, it’s time to start making a list of the materials you’ll need from the store. Make sure that you double check to see that you aren’t buying anything that you already have.

4. Designate Jobs (Kid-Friendly and Adult Jobs)

Part of the fun of making a family costume is getting your kids to help you with it. Doing so makes the costume making a family affair. Don’t be afraid of having to ‘clean up’ a mistake or mess while doing this. Perfection is not the goal of the costume. The goal is to be intentional about family and spending time together.





5. Relax and Have Fun (It doesn’t have to be perfect!)

As I mentioned above, it doesn’t have to be perfect by anyone else’s standard but yours! It’s supposed to be a great time to bond as a family. Use this time to have fun together as a family and create some great memories. If you are doing a family themed costume, then it’s great to allow some of the costume to reflect the personality of the person wearing it (even if that means it might get a little messed up).
