Both the Golden Retriever and the Beagle are generally loving, friendly and playful dogs, making it likely that a Beago (the name sometimes given to this mix) will be a great addition to your family. When considering any dog breed to add to your family, learning a little bit about the breed is an important step in the consideration process.

Appearance and Characteristics of a Retriever Beagle Mix

These two breeds might have similar personality traits, but their appearances differ greatly.

The Beagle is a small dog with short hair and distinct tri-color markings. According to AKC breed standards, the Beagle must stand no higher than 15 inches. The Golden Retriever, on the other hand, is much larger. Goldens average between 55 and 75 pounds and stand as high as 24 inches according to AKC standards.

If you are looking for a medium sized dog, this pooch might be the right dog for you because your puppy will grow to be a size somewhere in between. The appearance of your Golden Retriever Beagle will vary, some taking on the golden color of the Golden Retriever, and some displaying the tri-colored Beagle characteristic.

Personality, Exercise and Training of your Retriever Beagle

Both breeds share the same friendly, eager to please personality traits; making them great family dogs and generally highly trainable. But the Beagle side of your mixed breed dog might get your puppy into some trouble if left to his or her own devices.

The Beagle is a hound and will follow his or her nose if given the freedom. Be sure you are willing and able to provide adequate attention and exercise if you decide this breed is for you to keep your puppy busy and out of mischief.

Caring For and Feeding of a Golden Beagle Mix

The amount of grooming required for your Beago will depend on the type of coat your puppy ends up having. If your puppy has more of a long Golden Retriever coat, you will need to groom your puppy regularly. If, however, your dog ends up with a shorter coat more common to a Beagle, less grooming will be required.

In either case, grooming your Golden Retriever Beagle Mix is not complicated or very time consuming. A weekly brushing will be enough to keep your puppy’s coat in good shape.

Be sure to follow the guidance of your veterinarian when it comes to feeding your puppy. Your veterinarian can guide you in finding a high quality food and helping you determine how much to feed your dog to keep him or her as healthy as possible.

Just as being overweight is harmful and leads to health issues in people, overfeeding your dog puts him or her at risk for a number of health issues.

A Beago is a great choice for someone looking for a friendly, playful and fun dog like a Golden Retriever or a Beagle in a medium sized package. A Golden Retriever Beagle Mix will give you the best of both of these great breeds in a desirable medium size.
