Teaching the Elements of Art with hands

Teaching the Elements of Art with hands – this picture shows form – pin links to fabulous ideas!

I have seen this lesson done all over the internet and have decided it looks fun and has the potential to teach the students multiple things: contour line, Op Art, Value, and I am going to sneak in the use of pattern. Students will trace thier hand in pencil. Students will use a ruler and pencil to run horizonal lines across thier paper, while jumping over and continuing after each part of the hand. So, the hand will have no straight pencil lines through it, only around it. After the lines are drawn, students will connect each end of the horizontal lines. But, instead of using straight lines and a ruler, students will draw curved lines to create the illusion of three dimensional form. After studnets connect each straight line with a curved, they will outline them with black marker. THen they will choose a color pattern to use inbetween the lines. They can color the hand with marker or colored pencil. They will also add value around the hand to further illude the idea of three dimensionality.

the value had to be added during the coloring process. This is a more advanced method than the marker.

consider the light source…

If the light is above, the highest part of the hand and fingers will be the lightest. The valleys inbetween the hands will be the darkest. Shade considering the source.
