Conch’s eyes

Conch’s eyes

Conchs have some pretty interesting eyes! Here’s the scoop:

  • Eyestalks:Ā Their eyes aren’t located on their head directly, but rather on the ends of long, mobile stalks that can be retracted into their shell for protection.
  • Camera-like:Ā Unlike some simpler eyes found in mollusks, conch eyes are more complex and resemble a camera in some ways. They have a lens, cornea, pupil, iris, and retina.
  • Good vision:Ā Research suggests conch vision might be better than previously thought. They can detect objects as small as one degree within their visual field.
  • Strawberry conch champs:Ā The strawberry conch species seems to have the most sophisticated vision among conchs, with at least six cell types in their retinas, allowing them to perceive details better.

Overall, conch eyes are a surprising feature for these shelled creatures. They offer them a good level of awareness of their surroundings.
