Get the look of this prismatic Marion Best-designed room inspired by Mary Quant. This insanely cool space was part of the 1967 Australian design exhibition ‘Rooms on View’. Dreamed up by influential interior decorator Marion Hall Best, it’s called ‘A Room For Mary Quant’ and was inspired by the British designer’s vibrant fashion legacy. Best’s career began in the 1930s, but she is most remembered for her ultra modern aesthetic and unabashed use of color during the 1960s and 70s. Employing hues lifted from Fauvist painters like Henry Matisse, Best shunned conventional design wisdom, covering every inch of every space with vivid splashes of fuchsia, orange, turquoise, and yellow (she famously hated beige). ‘A Room for Mary Quant’ is an sterling example of the Marion Best look — the walls are sponge-painted in tomato red and papaya, and the space is filled out with imported Finnish furnishings, like a hot pink rya rug, an Eero Aarnio globe chair lined in orange, and various Scandinavian glasswares and accessories. If you like this, check out the sequel, ‘A Room for Mr. Peter Sculthorpe’, created for ‘Rooms on View’ in 1971.
